E-government helps simplify processes and makes government information more easily accessible for public sector agencies and citizens.

In 2011, B.C. fully upgraded its online presence, and has in a recent
national evaluation of government's online presence by Stratford Institute achieved
the number-one ranking in Canada for e-government.
In 1999, Government of Canada announced its Government On-Line initiative.
The goal was to connect to its citizens and make more information and services available online.
The initiative was led by Public Works and Government Services Canada and spanned across various
government branches.
The result was a common user experience for all government web sites.
It also ensured online availability of the 130 most commonly used services as well as the
capability to allow secure electronic payment.
Subsequent to this rollout, Canada ranked first for four consecutive years between 2001 and 2004,
among 22 national governments, based on a Accenture survey, according to the Parliament of Canada website.
Canadian government has several other long-term e-government goals, including
improving efficiencies and transparency between departments,
according to Public Works and Government Services Canada.
To meet these new performance goals as well as achieve their core missions,
agencies will benefit from adopting proven best practices used by world-class
companies. And Information Technology will play a major role.
Powerful forces are changing the U.S. public sector, and for many agencies,
nothing short of a major transformation is required.
In the United States the Clinger-Cohen Act, the FAIR Act, the President's Management Agenda, and
the homeland security reforms resulting from the events of September 11th have
created a pressing need for new public sector performance goals.
To meet these new performance goals as well as achieve their core missions,
agencies will benefit from adopting proven best practices used by world-class
companies. Information technology and adaptive approaches will play a major role.
Today, agencies need to focus on:
-
Services for citizen that are on a par with online habits and free markets
-
Agency-wide and intra-agency IT integration and management
-
Cyber and non-cyber threats, and availability
-
Greater cost-effectiveness, productivity and agility
